Boys' Birthday Party near Montreux: Celebrating Ages 8–12 in an Underground Military Fort

An underground military fort near Montreux, open for children's birthday parties

In Veytaux, four kilometres from Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva, the Fort de Chillon Museum is housed in an artillery and infantry fort built between 1941 and 1942, carved directly into the limestone rock. The fort covers 2,125 m², was classified as a state secret until 2001, and opened to the public in 2020 as an interactive museum. It sits opposite the famous Chillon Castle — but where the medieval castle is visible from a distance, the fort itself is almost invisible from outside, built into the cliff face with no prominent signage.

For the past two years, the museum has also offered a birthday package for children aged 8 to 12. It is a recent option, still relatively unknown in the region, which makes it an unusual choice for families looking for something outside the standard circuit.

The venue: 20 underground rooms inside a real bunker

The fort contains more than twenty spaces spread across several levels: access galleries, firing positions, a command room, ammunition stores and a military kitchen. The museum's scenography combines period objects, soundscapes, projections and interactive games to reconstruct daily life as experienced by the Swiss soldiers who served here for more than fifty years, until the fort was decommissioned in 1995.

The internal temperature stays at a constant 19°C year-round, making it a workable venue in any season — including summer heat or rainy days.

The birthday package: what is included

The package is priced at CHF 300 all-inclusive, for a group of up to 10 children and 2 adults. It is designed for children aged 8 to 12.

Museum visit The birthday child and their guests explore the full museum at their own pace, accompanied by their parents. A group puzzle is built into the visit route and solved collectively.

Birthday room A dedicated room is made available for one hour to cut and eat the cake. Families can choose their preferred time, from 2 p.m. onwards.

Artisan cake The cake is made by Maison Durgnat using locally sourced ingredients.

Drinks Morand fruit syrups, made from natural ingredients, are served without limit.

Sweets and gifts Each invited child receives a bag of sweets and a gift from the museum's partners. The birthday child receives an additional gift from the museum itself.

Invitation card A printable PDF in the Fort de Chillon's colours is provided so invitations can be printed at home.

No deposit is required at the time of booking. Full payment is made on arrival, on the day of the party.

Why this package suits boys aged 8 to 12 in particular

The fort's setting — military architecture, firing positions, wartime equipment, defensive strategy — tends to engage children in this age group naturally, and boys in particular. The immersive character of the space, combined with the group puzzle to solve, turns the visit into a collective activity with a clear objective, rather than a guided walkthrough.

The birthday package has only been available for two years, which means most families in the area are not yet aware of it. For a child of this age, visiting a place that classmates have not been to carries its own appeal.
