Switzerland's Most Unique Immersive Restaurant: Step into History at the Bistrot du Soldat
There are restaurants. And then there are experiences. The Bistrot du Soldat, nestled in the heart of the Fort de Chillon Museum in Montreux, firmly belongs to the second category. Unique in Switzerland, it invites you to enjoy a meal like nowhere else: in the former military canteen of a secret fortress, eating from real soldiers' mess kits.
An Immersive Culinary Experience, Unique in Switzerland
Built in 1941 during the Second World War and classified top secret until 2001, Fort de Chillon is one of the best-kept secrets of the Vaud Riviera. Now transformed into an interactive museum, it houses the Bistrot du Soldat at its core — a themed restaurant that faithfully recreates the atmosphere of the era. Tables are arranged as they were historically: two-person tables, just like the original mess hall where citizen-soldiers would eat after exercises. You will eat from real aluminium mess kits using the same cutlery as the troops. A total immersion into the daily life of the Swiss soldier.
A truly unique gastronomic experience: sit where soldiers rested, and taste the dishes that the Swiss army served its men — reinvented for today.
A Historic Restaurant That Tells the Swiss Military Story
The Bistrot du Soldat is more than a place to eat. It transports you into an authentic setting at a constant 19°C, carved into the rock a stone's throw from Lake Geneva. Every detail recreates the atmosphere of military meals from 1940 to 1995. Our chef reimagines the great classics of Swiss army cuisine — cervelat salad, rösti, Hot Dog du Soldat — with a refined, modern touch.
The Perfect Spot for Families, Friends or Corporate Events
With just 24 seats, the Bistrot du Soldat offers an intimate, convivial atmosphere. Accessible without visiting the museum, it also welcomes groups from 20 people for coffee & croissant or aperitif formulas — a one-of-a-kind setting for private and corporate events on the Vaud Riviera.
Open All Year Round, in Any Weather
Thanks to the constant temperature of 19°C, the restaurant is enjoyable in both summer and winter, whether it rains or shines. A year-round original outing for families, couples, school groups and Swiss military history enthusiasts.
