Cervelat Salad, Rösti and Military Mess Kit: Swiss Army Food at Your Table

A Unique Experience for the Whole Family

Imagine sitting in the former canteen of Swiss soldiers, deep inside a fortress carved into the rock overlooking Lake Geneva. In front of you, a steaming original aluminium mess kit, filled to the brim. That is exactly what awaits you at the Bistrot du Soldat, the restaurant of the Fort de Chillon Museum in Montreux.

Cervelat Salad with Rösti: the Iconic Dish of the Swiss Army

At the heart of our menu is our signature dish: a cervelat salad served with crispy rösti, presented directly in an authentic Swiss military mess kit. The cervelat is Switzerland's national sausage. Grilled, cold or sliced into rings, it has accompanied Swiss soldiers for generations. A house-made mustard vinaigrette, fresh seasonal herbs and perfectly golden rösti — those crispy shredded potato cakes beloved across the German-speaking Swiss regions that every Swiss soldier knows by heart.

"Healthy, tasty and in sufficient quantity" — the motto of the Swiss military kitchen, brilliantly interpreted by our chef.

The Hot Dog du Soldat: Military Street Food, Reinvented

For a lighter meal or a quick bite, discover our Hot Dog du Soldat. An exclusive recipe inspired by army field rations, prepared with fresh local ingredients and served, of course, with a military twist. A dish that delights both adults and children alike.

Military Classics Served in Authentic Aluminium Mess Kits

At the Konkordiaplatz — the historic gathering place of Fort de Chillon's soldiers — every dish is presented in an original three-part aluminium mess kit, identical to those used by the Swiss Army between 1940 and 1995. This is more than a meal: it is a full immersion into the daily life of the Swiss citizen-soldier.
