The Most Beautiful Christmas Markets Around Montreux: Our 2026 Guide

Every year, from late November onward, the Vaud Riviera puts on its festive lights. Between the illuminated chalets lining Lake Geneva, the scent of mulled wine, and Santa Claus soaring over the rooftops, the Montreux region transforms into one of Europe's most beautiful Christmas destinations. Here is our selection of the markets not to be missed, from the closest to the farthest away.

Marché de Noël

1. Montreux Noël, the unmissable classic

It's impossible to talk about Christmas on the Riviera without starting here. Ranked among the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe, Montreux Noël sets up more than 170 illuminated chalets along the Lake Geneva promenade, through the Grand-Rue and into the covered market. The event, now in its 32nd edition, runs from November 20 to December 24, 2026.

The highlight of any visit? The famous flying Santa, who soars over visitors on his sleigh every day at 5pm, 6pm, and 7pm (and also at 4pm on Saturdays), before landing on the market square. Families can also hop on the cogwheel train up to Rochers-de-Naye, at 2,042 meters above sea level, to visit Santa's house nestled among the snow-capped peaks.

Good to know: the market is located just 200 m from Montreux train station — public transport remains the best way to get there.

2. Vevey Riviera Noël, cozy and gourmet

Just a few kilometers from Montreux, Vevey Riviera Noël has cultivated its own identity: around forty exhibitors, a grand Vaud-style chalet, an enchanting carousel, and an ice rink set up on the Place du Marché. Between two laps on the ice, head to Place Scanavin to warm up by the bonfires and inside Finnish kotas — an ideal cozy break after a stroll along the lake.

3. Villeneuve Riviera Noël, the Village of Elves

Since 2024, Villeneuve has joined the "Riviera Noël" alliance alongside Montreux and Vevey, under the motto "Together, we are stronger." Head to the Village of Elves (Village des Lutins), where illuminations, cozy chalets (with their famous churros), and activities for young and old alike create a truly fairy-tale setting. Children can even meet Santa's elves in creative workshops. The market runs from November 20 to December 24, just 500 m from Villeneuve train station — a free little train also connects the station to the village.

4. Bô Noël in Lausanne, the great urban getaway

A little further away (around 18 km), the Vaud capital is well worth the detour. Bô Noël turns downtown Lausanne into a true festive playground: the covered market at Saint-François, the local produce market at Place des Papilles, the artisans' market on Rue du Bourg, a Ferris wheel, a petting farm, and a fondue area. The 2026 program is expected to run from November 19 to December 31, opening with a grand Christmas parade. What starts as a simple shopping trip turns into a full immersion in holiday magic.

5. Gruyères Christmas Market, medieval charm

For a more picturesque break, head to the village of Gruyères (around 25 km away), where about forty craftspeople set up their stalls between the medieval ramparts. Hot drinks, regional specialties, and a postcard-perfect setting make it arguably one of the most photogenic Christmas markets in French-speaking Switzerland.

6. Aigle Castle, wine country magic

About ten kilometers from Montreux, Aigle Castle also dresses up for the holidays, offering a distinctive setting amid the vineyards for Christmas activities and decorations.

🔒 Don't miss it: Santa's secret vault at the Fort de Chillon Museum

For an unusual break between two Christmas markets, head to the Fort de Chillon Museum, a former military fortress carved into the rock, classified "Secret-Défense" until 2001, and located right across from the famous Château de Chillon. During the holiday season, the museum unveils its brand-new attraction: Santa's secret vault, an immersive experience for the whole family within the fort's underground galleries. It's an original way — and a warm one too, thanks to the site's constant 19°C temperature — to extend the Christmas magic beyond the chalets and mulled wine.
